Northern Essex Community College
Northern Essex Community College is located in northeastern Massachusetts, with its main campus in Haverhill, and an expanding campus in Lawrence, an old, industrial city of 90,000.
Like Bristol Community College in New Bedford, Northern Essex opened its Lawrence campus and experienced substantial growth with little possibility of expansion because of budgetary constraints. Working collaboratively with Higher Education Partners, the college completed the renovation of a vacant building just across the street from its existing campus, and opened its doors to 200 students in the Fall of 2011.
Programs include Perioperative Nursing, Emergency Management, Phlebotomy, Medical Billing, and a General Studies, Health Sciences degree. It is a state of the art facility with new lab space that was non-existent on the Lawrence campus prior to the HEP/Northern Essex partnership.
Over the next three year period, Northern Essex scaled up to over 1,000 students, with new degrees and certificates being offered in Cardiovascular Technology, Ophthalmology Medical Assisting, OB-GYN Med Assisting, Orthopedic Medical Assisting, Central Sterile Supply Management, LPN to RN, Medical Coding, Occupational Therapist Assistant, Physical Therapy Assistant, Medical Lab Technology, Orthopedic Technician, Exercise Science, and Health Information Technology and Informatics.
The programs provide an enormous opportunity to Lawrence residents to become trained in occupations with good job growth potential, and with good wages and benefits.
The College recently requested an additional expansion of the partnership so they could add additional classes to another nearby building. They are now looking at innovative learning models, such as partnering with a 4-year institution and grater online expansion.
